With Thanksgiving and Christmas quickly approaching it is safe to assume that some of you, if not many, are already feeling the stress of holidays. As you prepare for family gatherings, parties, food prep, and buying those all important Christmas presents, don't forget to take care of your mental and physical health first. Here are some tips to help you stay calm and enjoy the holiday season this year!
1. MAKE A LIST AND CHECK IT TWICE!
Ease some of the headaches by making a calendar of important events and a corresponding to-do list for each important date. This will help you stay on track of all those important details that can sometimes slip between the cracks during preparations. Write it down or lose it.. and time is too precious for that.
2. START BUYING PRESENTS NOW!
Don't wait until Black Friday or after Thanksgiving. Go ahead and start purchasing those special gifts now. Many stores already have their shelves stocked with many present ideas so take advantage of planning early. Go ahead and mark shopping off your to-do list. (Can you believe Hobby Lobby already had their Christmas decor displays in stores in July???)
3. GO SIMPLE INSTEAD!
While you are out looking for presents try a more simple approach this year. Instead of worrying about finding 5 or more gifts for every person of your family, focus on 1 or 2 at most gifts that will truly mean a lot to the person receiving. Think of that person's favorite hobbies, special moments you have shared together, or gifts that bring back childhood memories. The most important gift during Christmas isn't how many presents one has but the meaning behind each one received.
4. CRANK UP THE MUSIC!
Set your ipod, radio, or tv station to your favorite Christmas jams and rock out. Not only will you burn some of those calories you intake from all the delicious meals and treats we splurge on during the holidays but dancing, singing, and just listening to your favorite music lifts your "feel good hormones" and relieves stress at the same time! To get you started here is one of my favorite Christmas songs I like to dance to:
5. JUST BREATHE!
One of the best ways to relax during any stressful moment in your life is to practice deep breathing. When stressed our body is deprived of oxygen and this causes our muscles to become tight and achy. Deep breathing replenishes oxygen into our blood and directly to our muscles helping you to relax. It only takes 5 minutes of deep breathing to last for hours of relaxation!
Here’s how it’s done:
* Sit up straight
* Place the tip of your tongue up against the back of your front teeth. Keep it there through the entire breathing process
* Breathe in silently through your nose to the count of four
* Hold your breath to the count of seven
* Exhale through your mouth to the count of eight, making an audible “woosh” sound
* That completes one full breath. Repeat the cycle another three times, for a total of four breaths
6. DON'T BE AFRAID TO SAY NO!
As much as we all want to be able to do everything for those we love, sometimes we just physically can't be everything to everyone at all times. You need a break so don't feel you are being mean or selfish if your schedule or health doesn't allow you to do just "one more thing" for someone you love.
7. IT IS OKAY TO SPLURGE ON TASTY TREATS!
Go ahead and enjoy that piece of cake, donuts, hot chocolate, ham, and sides... Thanksgiving and Christmas only come once a year so don't worry about your waistline, let yourself enjoy the little things in life once in awhile!
8. ENJOY CHRISTMAS FAVORITES WITH YOUR FAMILY!
Make time to gather the family together, pop a big bag of popcorn, and enjoy a Christmas movie such as Home Alone or National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation for some much needed laughs! Here are few funny images to kick off the laughfest!
